In March2021, for Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, Gillian, Kate, Abi, Lee Ann, Lizzie and Katie formed Team Sparkle and walked in Sarah's name targeting 295,000 steps each and raising money for Ovarian Cancer Action. This number represents the number of women diagnosed globally with ovarian cancer each year.
In addition to raising funds we all participated to raise awareness of the symptoms of this disease which can masquerade as IBS and other gastro conditions. We want to arm women with knowledge so that they can have an informed discussion with their GP (who may never have seen a case of ovarian cancer before) and emphasise that they should never be afraid of wasting their doctor's time.
As a team we walked over 2.5 million steps. This equates to around 1,300 miles; just short of a round trip to Venice, one of Sarah's favourite holiday destinations. We over came the challenge of achieving a daily step count whilst home schooling, working, caring for others and in weather that didn't always look on us kindly. We discovered new places and revisited old loved ones (quite often with some of them due to lockdown restrictions!). We discovered social media. We saw the beauty of spring begin to appear. We lost a few Lbs. We kept each other going when feeling the mountain of steps left to do as the month progressed. We were Sarah’s ambassadors. We have also raised over £8,500 for OCA (over £10k including gift aid), an incredible sum which keeps increasing as donations continue to come in.
We would like to thank our supporters. Those who have walked with us (both 2 and 4legged), those who have spoken to us about what we are doing and why, those who have so generously sponsored us, and those who are in the process of doing so. We would also like to thank all those involved in keeping our disintegrating joints, muscles and feet going for the month. And a big thankyou to Kate whose idea Team Sparkle was.
